Sekela Coles was raised in West Philadelphia by two hard-working and dedicated parents, Pattison and Jacqueline Pierce-Mungai, who instilled in her the importance of education and community. After graduating from Central High School in 1995, she went to college at Lincoln University. Sekela received her undergraduate degree in Finance & Banking in 1999 from Lincoln University and immediately following her graduation was hired by Citifinancial, the consumer finance subsidiary of Citigroup. While starting a family and working full-time as an Assistant Manager performing credit analysis, lending and collections, Sekela received her MBA from Penn State University in 2003. The following year she returned to school fulltime in a doctoral program and in 2010 completed her Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration, specializing in Nonprofit Management & Leadership, from Walden University.
Sekela has stayed active in numerous community endeavors since moving to the Upper Darby community in 2003. She has served on the Election Board for her precinct and is an elected Committeewoman. Sekela is a 2011 graduate of Upper Darby Police Department's Citizens Police Academy, a new initiative started by UDPD to strengthen the relationship between community members and the local police department. In 2012, she was selected and elected as a Delegate for President Barack Obama to represent her congressional district at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. In December 2014 Sekela was appointed to the Transition Committee for PA Governor-Elect Tom Wolf on the Drug & Alcohol Programs Team. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Friends of Sellers Hall (2014-present), Bywood’s Title I Parent Advisory Council (2012- present), the Past President of Bywood Elementary's Home & School Association (2011-2013), was a member of Upper Darby School District's PIP Committee (2010-2012), and a member of the Board of Directors of the Elvira B. Pierce Scholarship Fund of Overbrook High School (2006-present).
On November 5th 2013, Dr. Sekela Coles was elected to serve as Councilwoman for the 7th District of Upper Darby. During her beginning years on council Sekela immediately worked towards building strong, positive, and involved relationships with her constituency including community meetings, a Domestic Violence Awareness Workshop, a Discussion Panel celebrating Black History Month, a Spring Food Drive, and presenting for various community groups at their respective events. In May of 2014 Sekela received the 'Ordinary Women who do Extraordinary Things Award' from Coalition of Hope Offering Inner City Empowerment Services, Inc (CHOICES), in November of 2014 she received the 'Outstanding Elected Democratic Woman Award' from the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women (PFDW) and in March of 2015 she received the 'HERSTORY Award’ from the Women’s Federation of World Peace (WFWP) Pennsylvania Chapter.
In addition to being a mother of two children, her community and political involvement, Sekela teaches classes in the Business Departments of Harcum College and Delaware County Community College.
